University of Gothenburg
Department of Biological and Environmental Science
The department is placed at three different localities: in Gothenburg Botanical garden, at Medicinarberget in Gothenburg, and at the marine research station that is run by the Sven Lovén Centre for Marine Infrastructure-Kristineberg. The current position is placed at the University building in Gothenburg Botanical garden.
The Department of Biological and Environmental Science (http://bioenv.gu.se) is the host of the Gothenburg Global Biodiversity Centre, GGBC, which was launched on January 1st, 2017. The Centre has two main goals: to further develop biodiversity research, and to bridge the gap between scientists, the public and industry through various outreach activities.
The Centre represents a long-term collaboration among the following institutions at the University of Gothenburg: the Department of Marine Sciences, the Department of Biological and Environmental Science, the Department of Geosciences, Herbarium GB, the Centre for Sea and Society, and the Linnaeus Centre for Marine Evolutionary Biology. Moreover, it comprises the following organisations: Department of Energy & Environment, Chalmers University of Technology, Havets Hus, Maritime Museum and Aquarium, Nordens Ark, The Gothenburg Botanical Garden, The Gothenburg Museum of Natural History, and Universeum Science Centre.
The research group of Alexandre Antonelli (Antonelli Lab, http://antonelli-lab.net) comprises ca 15 employees including students, researchers and administrative personnel, as well as ca twenty associated members. The group works with several biodiversity-related questions with focus on evolution and biogeography of the American tropics. The group's research has had large international impact and received several prestigious grants, from the European Research Council ERC, the Swedish Research Council VR, the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, and the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research, among others.
Within the Antonelli Lab, your work as project manager will be to: support Alexandre Antonelli (based primarily at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew from February 4, 2019) in managing his research group; coordinate and support the day-to-day research and outreach activities of lab members; organise and lead weekly and annual meetings; follow up on the progress and deliverables of scientific projects; overview the group’s economy; and other similar tasks as for the centre. The position does not include separate time for own research but you will have the possibility to participate in some research projects if there is time and interest.
This position will also be evaluated for the role of Director of the GGBC. This appointment is ultimately made by the Dean of the Faculty of Sciences. This role is estimated to comprise 50% of the total working time. The appointment as Director includes, among others: to pursue and further develop visions, goals, and strategies; apply for external funding; take responsibility for the economy; represent the centre internally and externally, sometimes involving national or international travels; continue to build on collaborations with BECC, MERGE, GMV, Focali, and other biodiversity-related networks and initiatives in Sweden; lead new recruitments; participate as an adjunct to the centre’s Steering Board meetings. You will also lead the work by the centre’s partner employees and new hires in order to organise conferences and meetings; coordinate the arrival of guest visitors and students; compile reports and newsletters; update homepages; communicate on social media.
Your role is to manage these two groups. You will work closely with the department's administrative staff. You will contribute to strengthening and improving relations within the Biodiversity centre and with external organisations (private and public) within the field.
